Dragonball Online Ultimate New player Guide

Edit: Citrinate also has a similar guide here. You should read that too. He covers some of the thing I cover in greater detail, but I also cover some other things. (Maybe the guides should be merged. I have no problem with that.

1.Intro

Hello and welcome to the Ultimate New Player guide.

So you have downloaded the game, created a free taiwanese account (this guide works for korean too), installed the English Patch and created your human (cause it all about TEH SUPA SAYANS, amiright?) and now you have no idea what the hell is going on. Well this guide is here to help you understand some of the basic aspects of the game to get you started. I am assuming you have some experience with mmos or rpgs in general, so I won't cover trivial stuff such as what are Life Points, experience points, levels and what they do. If you don't, then this game is probably not for you yet, as being in chinese doesn't help you get accustomed to mmos.

2.Rage Points (RP)

Ok so first off you will notice 3 bars under your characters name: LP, EP and RP. LP are your life points, EP are your energy points (mana) and RP are your Rage Points. Rage points fill up the bar when you get hit, and when the bar is full you get a charge (a little yellow ball below the bar). You can then use that charge to power up your skills or add various effects on them (like knockdown). To do that you just have to press and hold the button of the skill you want to power up, instead of just pressing it. More on that on the Skills section. You can also charge RP out of combat by pressing Z, but only after you do your first time leap quest where you meet grandpa Gohan. RP degenerates out of combat.

3.Skills

By opening your skill tree (default K) you can see all the skills your character can learn. You start with 1-2 skills learned by default and every level you gain one skill point that you can spend to either learn a new skill (at the apropriate character level) or upgrade a skill you already know. If you have played Diablo II then this is almost the same system. The skills are also color coded. The red ones are physical damaging skills, the blue ones are energy damaging skills, the green ones are buffs and the purple ones are debuffs. The top right skill is the Ask Popo skill, if you cast it you go back to your home teleport area. You can change that area at the big popo stones in cities or quest hubs.
By clicking the symbol above the + you can select the default added effect to your skill when you cast it with RP. Some are grayed out because the skill must first reach a certain level to gain access to it (the level required is displayed as Value:X where X is the level).
To see what every skill does use this link: http://www.dbocom.com/skills.php However the skill database is outdated so please don't use the numbers you see there but the numbers you see in-game.
WARNING. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!! ->After level 30 YOU CANNOT RESET YOUR SKILLS. Well, you can, but it would cost you a lot of zennies (50-100 millions depending on server) or real life cash. So the basic guideline is this: Up to level 30 do whatever the hell you want with you skill points, but before you hit 31 reset them, make up your mind about the master class you want to be and search this forum for a good build for that master class. You will find many depending on what you want to do endgame (PvE or PvP).

4.Quests

As you probably know, quests are your main source of EXP. Get whatever quest you can find in an area and don't move on to the next until you have completed most of them. You can also use your scouter to find quests. To do that you need the quest search chip. You get that through quests very early in the game (level 2-3) but even if you don't have it or can't find it, the scouter merchant sells it on the second tab of items he sells. After you get the chip, open your scouter (default U) and add the chip to it. Then open the scouter scanner (default T) and click the second option (or press 2). You can also add various effects and stats to your character with more chips (they look like red clocks).
To find out what you have to do to complete a quest, the best tip I have to give you is this: Open your map (default M) and look for red circles or X. By hovering your mouse over the circle you can see the name of the mob you have to kill or the object you have to interact with. Don't always trust the quest log to find what you have to kill, the map is more reliable.

Also check out this newcomer quest guide.. It has some good tips for newcomers.

5.Items

There are many different types of items in DBO, but we will cover the basics here. First are the equipment items. They can be armor, scouter and its parts, accesories or weapons (gloves are considered weapons btw). There are 5 different rarities among the equipment items. Starting from the most common to the rarer these are: Common(white), Superior(blue), Excellent(yellow), Rare(red) and Legendary(purple). Of course the rarer the item the better the bonus effects it gives. Below is an example.

If you want to know what the bonus effects do, you can either put on and off the item to see the changes on your character status screen (default C) or go to this very usefull item effect list.
Other usefull items are potions and food. Food works like in World of Warcraft, you character sits down and eats/drink to restore LP/EP. It is highly reccomended to use both potions and food excesivelly as without them your leveling up will be hell.

6.Adult/Selecting a Master Class

At level 30 you get to do a questline that makes you an adult and you chose your master class. Be sure what you want to be cause it is not reversable. You will also get your first HTB Skill. The HTB skill has 1 hour cooldown and requires RP to use. For more details about the questline use one of these awesome guides here or here.

7.Dragonballs

The Dragonballs can be used to call the Dragon to get items, skills (transformation, HTB2, dragon buffs), money etc. You will notice that some quests give you dragonballs as rewards. These are the Tier 1 Dragonballs (the ones with the black background) and you will progressivly get them all, by questing, at around level 20-21. You can only make one wish with these dragonballs and its recommended to do so ASAP, cause you will get insanely good armor and the dragonball chip for your scouter. The dragonball chip will allow you to see in your minimap if a mob has a chance to drop a tier 2 dragonball, but only during dragonball hunting periods. The tier 2 dragonballs give you access to more wishes, although there are some level restrictions on some (for example you can't wish for super sayan before level 40). For more information about the event check this post.

8.Auction House

You probably know what the Auction House (or AH) is if you ever played World of Warcraft. If you dont, it's a system where you can put items for sale or buy items other players sell. USE IT!! Even from lower levels. My level 39 character has almost 4 million zenies by selling various stuff, mostly treasure boxes, upgrade stones, rare and legendary items you can't or don't use. The english patch translates it completely so its easy to use. If you wanna make a sale and you want to check the value of the item, you can by right-clicking the item with the search box selected, and then pressing search.
